Why do you need more money while studying? I don’t think that I’ll have to explain the reason behind it because isn’t that obvious? More money means living a great life. Doing a job can get you some income to survive or get some extra pocket money without depending on your parents. I remember walking for more than 2 km some days just to save a couple of rupees. I don’t ever take a Tuk-Tuk back then because I feel that it is a waste of money. Times are even harder for other Sri Lankan undergraduates too now because the living expenses are higher than before.

The main differences between full-time work and part-time work lie in the number of hours spent at work, and the amount of responsibility placed on the employee. So, flexibility is another big advantage of part-time jobs. You still have time to attend university and spend a lot of time with friends. Those working less than half a day have the choice to work mornings, afternoons or evenings in establishments with longer hours.

Free lancing

You probably have some skills e.g., Web designing, editing, copywriting, computer programming, graphic design, or writing skills. Then you can find some freelance gigs, or you can use your skills and talents to build a business of your own, as a freelancer. Fiverr and Upwork are massive marketplaces for all types of freelance work.

Freelancing, it’s a world where most of us dipped our feet but left due to some bad experience. But things have changed. Freelancing has evolved over the last couple of years and has become vast and eye-catching. Now, there are a ton of platforms to choose from, and if you have talent, it’s easier to find work than ever before. It’s common knowledge in the world of finance that everyone should have more than one source of income. Freelancing helps you create that secondary source of income. Freelancing is good for clients too. Now they have an opportunity to find talent from a global pool as they are no longer limited by their address.

In the freelance world, there are two ways of getting paid – by the hour, or with a fixed fee for each project. many clients are willing to pay rs.500- 600 per hour for freelancers.

Massage therapist

Similar to being a fitness trainer, you do not require a college degree to become a massage therapist. So, what do you need to become certified masseuse? You’ll need to find an accredited massage therapy institute to get trained and become certified through the National Certification for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork

Once you complete your training, you can work as a massage therapist for the rest of your college years and pay it off while you study. Reports by PayScale show that massage therapists earn close to rs.800 every hour. You stand a greater chance of gaining if you are a student of health, medicine or even physical therapy. You could even transfer this into a full-time career if you decide you love it and wish to continue with it after graduation.

Fitness instructor

Exercising is one of the best ways to maintain your health and manage stress levels. If you are a gym fanatic, why not take up a fitness trainer job? To become a certified trainer, you will have to be certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) . What is more, before taking the ACE exam to become a personal trainer, you will need to get CPR certification. Luckily, personal trainer courses are amply available and can be completed within a few short months. You may have to put in a bit of work, but the payoff will be worth it if you find a job in this field. According to PayScale, fitness instructors' pocket close to Rs.2500 per every hour!

The median wage for fitness instructors is about 2300 per hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics — which means half of them make more than that. You'll save money on your own fitness. You'll probably get free membership to the gyms where you teach.

Sri Lanka's Minimum Wage is the lowest amount a worker can be legally paid for his work. Most countries have a nation-wide minimum wage that all workers must be paid. Sri Lanka's minimum wage rate is15 000 rupees per month.

Nursing assistant

If you’re hoping to land a job in health care after graduation, working in a hospital or senior living center as an undergrad should give you an edge. Nursing assistants typically report to registered nurses, and aide in tasks like cleaning, feeding, and transporting patients.

Many nursing students find value in working as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) during nursing school to add to their basic care and time-management skills. Most employers will allow nursing students to bypass the requirement of being certified but check the job announcements for these allowances.

Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) provide important basic care services, including feeding, bathing and grooming patients, and taking vital signs. A valuable member of the patient care team, CNAs are also known as "nursing aides" or "nursing assistants" and generally work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs). Becoming a CNA is a great entry point to a career the nursing profession, and there are a large number of CNA training programs nationwide for aspiring nursing aides to choose from.

How can we do CNA cause in Sri Lanka?

Generally, most certified nursing assistant programs take between four and 12 weeks. This is broken into instructional hours and clinical practice. A typical 120-hour CNA program offered over six weeks may include four weeks in class and two weeks in a clinical setting, depending on state guidelines.

It can make: 200 rupees per hour.

Nanny Jobs

To find babysitting and nanny jobs, let family and friends know you are available, check local job boards or sign up with Urban Sitter, which allows you to create a personal profile to showcase your skills, experience, and availability so you can easily connect with parents searching for childcare.

Being a nanny is more than just a job. There's a lot of responsibility that comes with it, but you also get to build a special bond with the kids you work with. And it's really nice to be able to fill in for parents and have them be comfortable that their kids are being taken care of.

Here's the standard that most agencies quote: “Anything to do with the children is the nanny's job: making their meals and maintaining the kitchen, cleaning their rooms, washing their laundry and putting it away, straightening and organizing their play area and toys.” So far, so good. A person working in Sri Lanka typically earns around 2000 LKR per day.
